Anchorage Disc Golf Site Selection and Management Study
UPDATE: Westchester Disc Golf Course Closure Details
Parks & Recreation will remove the disc golf course baskets at Westchester Lagoon the week of Monday, April 29th to protect the park’s sensitive terrain, which is softening from recent warmer weather conditions. The basket removal is consistent with the collaborative decision made last spring to offer this course during the winter only except for permitted events and tournaments.
The course will be available for permitted events and tournaments beginning the summer of 2013.
The following is a list of other disc golf courses available on Municipal lands:
Kincaid Park (18 holes)
Hanshew Middle School (9)
Service High School (9)
Russian Jack Springs Park (9)
Girdwood Disc Golf Course (18)
Schroeder Park (9)
Gruening Middle School (9)
Peter's Creek Disc Golf Course (18)
Eagle River High School (9)
There are also several privately run disc golf courses available in the Anchorage area.
Disc Golf Study Project Information
Parks & Recreation established an advisory group to assist the Department with 2 goals:
- Meet the demand for disc golf by identifying criteria to select locations for additional courses in Municipal parks
- Define management expectations for disc golf in Municipal parks
The advisory group is comprised of Parks & Recreation Commissioners, the Parks & Recreation Department, neighbors of Westchester Disc Golf Course, and local disc golf players. Four to six meetings are planned to create a design and management guide that will identify key criteria for the location of disc golf facilities and recommend management strategies for how these facilities can be successfully operated in our parks.
This project site will be updated regularly with meeting summaries, project documents, and public involvement opportunities.
