How do I get my library card?
If you are an Anchorage resident, fill out a registration form and show your photo ID. Bring a postmarked piece of mail that confirms your address: Mail must be addressed to you, in the envelope and postmarked within the past 2 weeks (i.e. this month’s utility bill). Outof‐ envelope mail, check stubs, etc. are not accepted.
If you do not have a valid piece of mail, a post card will be mailed to you. Return it to any APL location to verify your address. Until then, you can check out up to 3 items at a time on a temporary card .
If you are under 18, your parent or legal guardian must sign your registration.
Does my card expire?
Cards need to be renewed every three years.
Temporary cards expire after three months for adults and 6 months for youth if you do not verify your address.
Youth cards permanently expire on the child’s 18th birthday, at which time, they may apply for an adult card.
If you lose your card, the first replacement is free; after that, it is $1.
What if I’m not a resident of Anchorage?
Non‐Resident: $90 yearly, full borrowing privileges at APL .
Guest cards: $25 for three months, three item limit.

Your library card is easy to use. Follow these simple steps:
Carry your card when you visit the library—you will need it to check out/renew items and log on to computers.
Return items on time to avoid fines. Renew online or call 343‐2845 during open library hours if you can’t get to a library. Please have your library card number ready.
Return media items directly to the circulation desk to clear your item limit and check out new items immediately.
Take good care of library materials. You will be charged for lost or damaged items and books and media are expensive!
You are responsible for everything checked out on your card. Do not loan your card or materials to others.
Keep your contact information up‐todate. Report lost or stolen cards immediately by calling 343‐2845.
Fines for items returned late:
- 50¢/day ‐ adult books.
- 25¢/day ‐ youth books and storypackets.
- $1/day ‐ all media (DVDs, CDs, VHS, audio books, Playaways) and book club bags.
- $5 maximum fines per item.
- Items over 17 days late will be charged a replacement fee, plus a $5 processing fee per item. See staff for details.
- Per MOA policy, fines of $50 and more are sent to a collection agency.
What can I use my card for?
You can check out up to 50 items, including:
Books: for 21 days.
Movies: 5 DVDs & 5 VHS at a time for 7 days.
CDs & Audio Books: 10 at a time for 21 days.
Playaways: 10 at a time for 21 days.
Lapsit bags, Storypackets, Bilingual bags: 1 each at a time, for 21 days, not renewable.
Book Club bags: 2 at a time, for 6 weeks, not renewable.
Ready to Read Resource Center Tubs— books & resources for infants/toddlers/ childcare professionals.
Renew items up to 2 times, unless another patron has requested the item. Return items at any APL or partner location.
Interlibrary Loans (separate checkout times apply; see reference staff for details).
Skip the lines by using your card at self check and for computer reservations.
Borrowing privileges at most partner libraries, including UAA and ARLIS.
Sign up for notices by email to get a reminder 3 days before items are due and notifications of holds/overdue items (excludes Interlibrary Loans).
The 1st overdue notice is sent 5 days after items are due. If items are not returned, a 2nd notice is sent 10 days after the due date.
A bill for replacement + $5 processing fee per item is sent 17 days after the due date.
You may place requests on library materials to be held for you at the library location of your choice.
The Anchorage Public Library, the UAA/APU Consortium library and the extended campus libraries all participate in the request system. ARLIS and the Museum Library do NOT participate.
Search the Catalog to Place Hold Requests
If you can not find an item in the library catalog, you may submit an Inter-Library Loan or ILL.
We will try to find the material in another library and borrow it for you. The whole process can take 2-6 weeks.
