Food Safety & Sanitation Program will open at 10AM Wednesday, December 21st.
The Food Safety & Sanitation (FSS) program permits, regulates and inspects over 2000 public facilities in the Municipality of Anchorage, including food establishments, childcare center kitchens, public school kitchens, cosmetological shops and public pools and spas. FSS is also responsible for regulating pesticide applicators, noise, smoking and vector control.
Facilities are inspected at least annually but may be inspected more frequently based on the complexity of the operation and potential public health risk. For example, a stand selling only coffee and pastries may be inspected once or twice annually, whereas a full service restaurant may be inspected three or four times annually. Additional inspections may be conducted based on violation history.

FSS also investigates complaints from the public regarding facilities and functions that it regulates. Complaints can be filed via the internet, mail, telephone, or office visit.
Investigation and prevention of illnesses and outbreaks related to food and swimming pools are a priority for FSS. Timely reporting is key for a successful investigation. If you believe that you have contracted an illness from consuming food from a food or foodservice establishment or swimming at a public pool or spa, please call our office at 343-4200.
