Homeless Leadership Team
The Mayor’s Homeless Leadership Team (HLT) was established as part of Mayor Sullivan’s Strategic Action Plan to deal with Chronic Public Inebriates and Related issues of Homelessness in Anchorage. The HLT is comprised of numerous social service and government agencies and is reflective of the Municipality’s collaborative approach to dealing with this serious social and public safety issue.
Unlike the Anchorage Coalition on Homelessness, or it’s Executive Oversight Board who are actively working on solutions for the entire population of homeless individuals and families in Anchorage, the HLT’s focus is on that small number of citizens who are homeless and have chronic substance abuse and/or mental health issues. The purpose of the HLT is to provide the Mayor with short and long term strategies for effectively managing the challenges this population creates and to assist with identifying and leveraging community resources for implementing those strategies.
The HLT has three main objectives:
· Reduce deaths amongst chronically homeless alcoholics
· Reduce violence to and among the chronically homeless alcoholics
· Reduce neighborhood impacts from chronically homeless alcoholics
To meet these objectives, the HLT has formed five work groups, listed on the left, that are each tasked with creating supportable action plans.
In May 2010 the HLT submitted their initial recommendations to Mayor Sullivan. The Resources and Documents page containis links to the DRAFT recommendations document and portfolio of supporting documents.
