Recycling and Waste Reduction

Anchorage is committed to responsible waste reduction and disposal. The city operates a state-of-the-art landfill that protects surrounding groundwater while meeting air quality requirements and is actively working to increase the convenience and viability of recycling in the community.

Anchorage’s waste management utility, Solid Waste Services, is rolling out automated curbside recycling pickup for residential customers in three phases. Phase I was implemented in October 2008, and Phase II is expected in the fall of 2009. SWS also works with local businesses and non-profits in the community to develop solutions to recycling challenges. For example, SWS grants support a number of key elements of recycling in the community, including ALPAR’s popular Christmas tree recycling; glass recycling; and Port fees to get recycled materials into commodities markets.

The city is also bringing mixed paper recycling to all Anchorage School District schools.
