Public Road Closures During GLACIER Conference and Presidential Visit REVISED

Downtown Traffic Changes During GLACIER Conference and Presidential Visit

ANCHORAGE - Anchorage will host the international GLACIER conference at the Dena’ina Center, bringing over a thousand dignitaries and guests from all over the world. This international conference brings a heightened level of security involving a few street closures downtown for both drivers and pedestrians, specifically surrounding the Dena’ina Center and the Hotel Captain Cook.

These road closures should not impede accessibility to businesses located near the Dena’ina Center. Road Closure and no parking signs will be posted; parking violators will be towed. Because of the road closures and parking restrictions, City Hall will close at 1:00 pm on Monday.

Closures Surrounding Dena’ina Center on Monday, August 31, 2015 from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Drivers in this area of downtown can expect multiple street closures on Monday to include:

  • F Street between 7th Ave and 8th Avenue. Traffic will now be allowed on F St. northbound and southbound between 6th Ave. and 7th Ave., but may only use the north and east legs of the intersection.
  • G Street –midblock of 6th  Ave to 9th Avenue (the parking garage located on G street just before 7th avenue will be accessible to the public). G St. between 6th Ave. and 7th Ave. will be tapered down to one southbound lane that must turn westbound (right) onto 7th Ave.
  • 8th Avenue between F and H Streets
  • 7th Avenue between G and F Streets
  • The City Hall alley will function as normal, with traffic travelling westbound.

Pedestrians in this area of downtown can expect multiple street closures on Monday to include:

  • 8th Avenue between F and G Streets
  • G Street between 7th and 8th Avenues
  • F Street between 7th and 8th Avenues
  • The north sidewalk of W 7th Avenue between G and F Streets will be open to pedestrians.

Closures surrounding the Hotel Captain Cook as of 8:00 a.m. on Monday, August 31 through 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2015. (*please note these closures last a few more days than the road closures near the Dena’ina)

Drivers in this area of downtown can expect multiple street closures to include:

  • 4th Avenue between I and K Street
  • I Street between 4th and 5th Avenues
  • K Street between 4th and 5th Avenues
  • Westbound traffic on 5th Avenue between H and K Streets may be down to one lane.

Pedestrians in this area of downtown area can expect multiple street closures to include:

  • I Street between 4th and 5th Avenues
  • 4th and 5th Avenue between I and K Street, and K Street will have restricted pedestrian access.

This conference also brings the attendance of U.S. President Barack Obama.  Law enforcement and security agencies cannot discuss specifics of his travel or public appearance plans; however, motorists should expect short travel delays as the president is escorted throughout Anchorage.
