Youth Advisory Commission Announces 2016 Mini-Grant Recipients

Projects range from a youth led public art campaign to a peer-to-peer community mentorship

ANCHORAGE – Following a successful spring graduation summit, the Anchorage Youth Advisory Commission (YAC) released its list of recipients for the 2016 YAC mini-grants.

“The Youth Advisory Commission is excited for the opportunity to fund all the diverse projects submitted to us,” said Rainier Herczeg, YAC Chair. “From fine arts to social work, the youth of Anchorage demonstrated they're ready and able to make a positive difference in our community and the Youth Advisory Commission is proud to support them with remaining Good News, Great Kids program funds.” 

Five projects were awarded funding, totaling $1,250.

  • Alaska Youth for Environmental Action – A youth-led public art campaign.
  • Chalk the Talk – A youth-led positive community message campaign.
  • Anchorage Angels – Peer-to-peer community mentoring.
  • Anchorage Artist Co-op – Cultural bridge building workshop.
  • Young Lions of Alaska – Strengthening youth service/ improving our community at the neighborhood level.

 “YAC mini grants provide peer choice and support for Anchorage youth initiatives and projects, while teaching commissioners how to navigate a grant process,” said Mayor Ethan Berkowitz.  

The Youth Advisory Commission will begin offering monthly youth skill building workshops, as well as taking an active role in Mayor Berkowitz’s “Path to Purpose” workforce development strategy.
