ANCHORAGE - The National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA), a leading waste and recycling industry organization, awarded Solid Waste Services Department (SWS) driver Mark Frazure with a Driver of the Year award for the public sector (small) category.

"I'm honored to be recognized for my safety record," said Mark Frazure. "Safety is always a top priority for any driver, that’s why this award means so much to me and the department."

Mark Frazure, who is celebrating 32 years with SWS, operates one of the department's transfer trucks. Transfer trucks transport waste from the Central Transfer Station to the Anchorage Regional Landfill (ARL), a 32 mile roundtrip. On average a transfer truck makes 5 daily trips to and from ARL.

"The entire SWS team is extremely proud of Mark," said SWS Director Mark Spafford. "Safety is our top priority, and drivers like Mark make sure that not only he is safe, but others around him are as well. The whole department could not be happier for him."

SWS drivers have a history of being recognized for their outstanding safety records. In 2015, NWRA awarded SWS driver Marcial Magsambol with an award for Safe & Exemplary Service. The NWRA presented Mark Frazure with his award yesterday during a ceremonial breakfast at the 2016 Waste Expo.
