ANCHORAGE – Today, Mayor Ethan Berkowitz announced grantees for the 2016 Anchorage Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. Proposed 2016 recipients provide services and support to Anchorage’s low-income youth, seniors, and residents with disabilities. Grant awards for 2016 total $956,547.

“Anchorage is fortunate to work with terrific partners so that our community has safe places for our residents to benefit from fellowship and learning opportunities. These organizations are critical to weaving a strong, vibrant and inclusive Anchorage,” said Mayor Berkowitz.

CDBG is a federally funded, competitive grant program administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and managed by the Anchorage Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) designed to assist programs and organizations that serve low- and moderate-income households.

“CDBG funding brings federal dollars into Anchorage that we leverage to support programs providing quality of life improvements and opportunities for our neighbors. The benefits will resonate for years to come for the children and families, seniors, and Alaskans with disabilities whom we assist,” stated DHHS Director Melinda Freemon.

The Municipality’s CDBG awards reflect a commitment to supporting Anchorage’s most vulnerable and at-risk residents, by assisting the following organizations in providing their best possible services.

  • The Alaska Literacy Program, serving low-income individuals and families, will receive $124,635 for an access and efficiency rehabilitation program.
  • Anchorage Community Mental Health Services will receive $250,000 to replace the roof at Seeds of Change, a facility that serves low-income and disabled youth.
  • The Anchorage Senior Activity Center will receive $128,370 to upgrade their fire alarm system.
  • Challenge Alaska will receive $250,000 for the acquisition of real property for their Keil Center that serves individuals with disabilities and their families.
  • The Rural Alaska Community Action Program, Inc. will receive $115,200 for safety and efficiency upgrades at the Child Development Center that serves low-income families.
  • United Nonprofits, LLC will receive $88,342 for office safety and access office upgrades in space occupied by 8 non-profit organizations that serve low-income and disabled clients.

“We thank Mayor Berkowitz and the Community Development Block Grant Review Committee for making safety in the city a priority by upgrading the fire alarm system at the Anchorage Senior Activity Center, which serves 2,500 Anchorage members,” said ASAC Board President Kris Warren.
