ANCHORAGE – The Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department has partnered with Strava Metro to plot user trips with heat maps to see the most used routes for cyclists, pedestrians, and nordic skiers.

Strava anonymizes and aggregates millions of human-powered commutes uploaded each week, then partners with urban planners to improve city infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians. For users, Strava is an easy-to-use phone application, and free

As Vision Zero Anchorage focuses efforts on safety and comfort for all modes of travel, Strava data will help guide municipal resources toward projects benefitting the greatest number of cyclists and pedestrians, from trail improvements to sharrows on municipal streets.

“When we visualize data, we get a better understanding of Anchorage’s needs,” stated Mayor Ethan Berkowitz.
