September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month––a national event promoted by mayors across the country in an effort to raise awareness about the issue. Mayor Dan Sullivan and his fellow mayors recognize that prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed nonskin cancer among men in America, and accounts for a third of all new male cancer cases.

Mayor Sullivan urges men to take responsibility for their prostate health by talking to their health care providers to learn more about the disease and, when appropriate, to get screened.

Nationally, approximately 218,890 men will learn that they have the disease, and approximately 27,050 men will lose their lives to it. African-American men are disproportionately affected by prostate cancer, having higher rates of prostate cancer diagnosis and death than men of all other racial or ethnic groups in the United States.

“Prostate cancer is not just a man’s disease,” said Mayor Sullivan. “It devastates families. Almost one third of prostate cancer cases are found in men under age 65 during their prime years at work. The additional impact on wives and children, through loss of a loved one and loss of income, takes its toll.

“There is no better time than September, during National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, for Anchorage men to talk with their health care providers about this disease so that they can make informed decisions about maintaining their prostate health.”

Several opportunities exist for Anchorage men to receive free prostate screening. Details are listed below.
