November 15th is “America Recycles Day” and Mayor Sullivan has proclaimed the day as “Anchorage Recycles Day” to help bring recycling awareness to a local level.

“Recycling benefits us all, and it’s easy to do,” said Mayor Sullivan. “I encourage all citizens to focus on what they as consumers can do to reduce, reuse and recycle.”

Anchorage plans to celebrate this year with a juried art exhibit highlighting art created using repurposed materials.  The exhibition, called revAmp – Recycle – resTore, will kick off at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art (IGCA) on Friday, November 4, with an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. Attendees are encouraged to keep the revAmp-Recycle-resTore theme in mind and wear vintage, repurposed and/or recycled items.

The exhibit will run through Saturday, November 26.  The IGCA is located at 427 D Street and is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, noon to 4pm.

The event is organized by the Municipality of Anchorage Solid Waste Services, Green Star, ALPAR (Alaskans for Litter Prevention and Recycling), and Central Recycling Services.

“Whether you call it reusing, recycling, upcycling, or repurposing, our goal is to challenge people to rethink their waste and find creative ways to keep it out of the landfill,” says Donna Mears, municipal recycling coordinator.
