ANCHORAGE – Mayor Ethan Berkowitz announced DEA Special Agent Chris Tolley will become Anchorage’s new Chief of Police in October. To ensure a smooth transition, Agent Tolley will begin acting as a Deputy Chief at the Anchorage Police Department (APD) starting September 1.

“Chris shares my vision for the expansion of a community policing model to create a safe, secure, and strong Anchorage. From serving as a uniformed police officer, to managing the Alaska region for the DEA, Chris has the tools to lead APD,” stated Mayor Berkowitz. “I thank Chief Mew for his service to our community.”

Special Agent Tolley has over 35 years’ experience in law enforcement, including six years as a Baltimore police officer and 28 years with Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

“I want to thank Mayor Berkowitz for this opportunity. By partnering with other law enforcement agencies and finding ways to strengthen our local force, we will transform public safety from a goal to a reality for Anchorage neighborhoods,” said Chief Designee Tolley.

Chief Mew has accepted employment from a private firm that provides overseas services on behalf of the US government and other domestic duties as assigned.
