ANCHORAGE — Today, Mayor Ethan Berkowitz issued the following statement following the news of the first in-state Alaskan death due to COVID-19:

“We are saddened to learn of the passing of an Alaskan due to COVID-19. Our heartfelt condolences are with the individual's family and loved ones," said Mayor Ethan Berkowitz. “In ways that experts predicted, the reality of COVID-19 is unfolding in Alaska. The Municipality continues to prepare, as we have for the last two months, to take steps to slow the spread and impact of COVID-19. We ask each and every resident to do what is right and to do what is best for everyone: stay home except when necessary; wash your hands thoroughly; practice good social distancing – that means staying 6 feet away from others. If we take these actions, and practice them faithfully, we'll be able to minimize the number of Alaskans who will lose their lives to this lethal disease.  Though there will be more grieving in the days to come, we all have the ability to better protect ourselves, our families and our communities by taking precautions."
