Today Mayor Sullivan announced the most recent appointee to his administration. Mary Jo Torgeson enthusiastically accepted the position as Anchorage Public Library Director.
Torgeson began her professional career as a Branch Coordinator in Sheridan, Wyoming. Over the last 20 years, she has managed and directed library services in both small and large public libraries. Much of her experience has been in an urban library setting in the state of Washington, first at the King County Library System and later at the Seattle Public Library. Her most recent position was as Library Director at a medium-sized public library in Puyallup, Washington.
Torgeson brings to Anchorage a wide range of experience in developing user- centered library services that makes the library easier to use and understand. She has been a leader in developing library services to diverse communities, including services to non-English speaking communities. The new Library Director earned her Masters of Library Science at the University of Washington and her Masters of Public Administration at Seattle University.
“Ms. Torgeson is a welcome addition to my administration. Her accomplished career as a librarian in diverse settings will be most beneficial to the unique city of Anchorage” said Mayor Sullivan.
Ms. Torgeson’s passion is the belief that libraries are an essential part of a vibrant and cohesive community, both in the development of creating strong partners with business, schools and community agencies as well as in the development of services that transforms people’s lives. “Transformation starts with helping children learn to read, aiding people with technology, and providing information and resources for people wanting to learn throughout life” said Torgeson.
Mayor Sullivan would like to thank Nancy Tileston, the Technical Services Coordinator at the library for managing as interim director during this transition.
