ANCHORAGE ICE RINKS FACING FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS

Mayor Sullivan announced on Friday, September 20, 2013 that local public hockey rinks will receive facility upgrades citywide.

Due to a grant from the State of Alaska (SOA), the funding is available to upgrade the refrigeration systems, dasher boards, glass and seating replacement.

"We’ve been successful in procuring funds for our aging facilities from the Alaska State Legislature. I’m appreciative for the strong relationship between the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) and the lawmakers in Juneau," said Sullivan.

The following facilities received SOA grant funds:

  • Sullivan Arena $4,865,000;
  • Ben Boeke Ice Arena $5,905,000;
  • Dempsey Anderson $5,830,000; and
  • Harry J. MacDonald Center $4,000,000.

Mayor Sullivan sends his list of priorities to lawmakers in Juneau during the regular legislative session and works through the session in securing funding. He reveals the MOA priority book to the Anchorage caucus in November.

Various local non-profit organizations also work with the legislature for funding. In 2013 the YMCA received $6M for a new pool, Boys and Girls Club received $2.3M for faculty improvements and the Nordic Ski Club procured $900,000.
