ANCHORAGE- The Municipality of Anchorage’s Public Transportation Dept. recently installed video surveillance cameras at the Downtown and Dimond Transit Centers. Preliminary results already show a reduction in criminal activity.

The project, funded through grants from the Federal Transit Administration, was designed to increase safety and security for patrons at these two facilities. The project included installation of 29 cameras at the Downtown Transit Center and an additional six cameras at the Dimond Transit Center.

The video security solutions/Closed-circuit television (CCTV) provides fully digital IP video surveillance, and enterprise level video storage. These cameras have virtual pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) technology and feature high quality resolution. The equipment allows for instant review or quick search after an event. The cameras can be programmed to record at all times or triggered by an event such as motion or noise. The resolution allows for quality recognition of vehicles or individuals.

“Since the cameras were installed and signage went up last week, we’ve noticed a distinct difference in patrons’ behavior,” explained Lance Wilber, director of the Public Transportation Department. “It’s quieter and a more pleasant place to be. Security officers are able to deal with situations quickly to help Anchorage police officers do their job. Word is definitely getting out that we’re making arrests.”

The project was implemented by TecPro Solutions, a Certified Woman Owned Small Business, located in Anchorage. TecPro implements video security solutions nationwide through government service contracts and local installations.
