ANCHORAGE- Anchorage junior and senior high school students who are doing well in school, have overcome a challenge, and are active community members will be recognized today, Thurs., April 8, at the Good News! Great Kids! Awards banquet. Each year ten students are chosen for the Good News! Great Kids! recognition, and the winners will be honored tonight.

Started almost 15 years ago, the Good News! Great Kids! Program informs the community about some of Anchorage’s most inspiring high school juniors and seniors. Additionally, the students are asked to name their most inspirational teacher or mentor who is then presented with the mayor’s CREATE (Community Recognition for Educational and Teaching Excellence) award.

The Good News! Great Kids! Program is a partnership between the Mayor’s Office, the Anchorage Daily News, the University of Alaska and AT&T Alaska. The winners are recognized in the Anchorage Daily News and at tonight’s banquet that includes Mayor Dan Sullivan, UA Assistant VP Saichi Oba, UA Chancellor Fran Ulmer, Supt. Carol Comeau and several Anchorage Assembly and Anchorage School Board members.

Tonight’s banquet begins at 5:30 p.m. at UAA’s Lucy Cuddy Center.
