Highlights include a salute to seniors, dynamic speakers, and Mayor’s Unity and Awards Dinner

Recognizing the many cultures that call Anchorage home and the common values that bind us together, Mayor Dan Sullivan kicks off the annual Mayor’s Diversity Month, Sept.1-30. 

“Mayor’s Diversity Month is an opportunity for the city to partner with the community to showcase diversity efforts,” said the mayor. “There are some great events this year, and we encourage the public to come out and participate.”

This year’s diversity month events include:

  • Salute to Seniors Featuring actor Danny Glover: Tues., Sept.1, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Anchorage Senior and Activity Center, 1300 E. 19th Ave. Contacts: Raynette, 258-7823 or Celeste, 343-4890.
  • East High Football Luau: Sat., Sept. 5, 1-4 p.m. at East High, 4025 E. Northern Lights Blvd. Fundraiser for team equipment includes live Hawaiian music, cuisine and entertainment. Contact: Pauline Powell, 223-1761. 
  • Dia de la Fiesta: Hispanic/Latino Day at the Anchorage Museum: Sun., Sept. 13, 1-4 p.m. Traditional costume fashion show, community performances, arts and crafts. Contact: Angelina Estrada-Burney,
  • Fiestas Patrias de Mexico (Mexican Independence Day): Tues., Sept. 15, 7-11 p.m. Egan Center, 555 W. Fifth Ave. Contact: Victor Elizondo, 334-9573.
  • Salute to Sisterhood: on Thurs., Sept. 3, 10, 17, and 24 at 5:30 p.m., VFW #9978, 101 Oklahoma St. Music, socialization, discounted prices for pampering services: nails, hair, massage, etc. Contact: Moe, 646-7950.
  • First Tee Fundraiser: on Thurs., Sept. 17, 5:30 p.m., Petroleum Club, 3301 C St. Fundraising event to impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.   • Through our Eyes Tour: Thurs., Sept. 17, 5:30 p.m. at the Alaska Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 3903 Taft Dr. A hands-on, fast-paced look at the work done to help people with vision loss meet their goals for life and work. Contact: Karla Jutzi,
