ANCHORAGE - Solid Waste Services (SWS), with the help of staff, safely processed 284,000 tons of garbage and 4,300 tons of recyclable material in 2015.

In 2015, SWS expanded recycling efforts by opening a new drop-off location at the Central Transfer Station (CTS). The CTS accepts cardboard, plastic bottles, jugs, mixed paper, newspaper, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and jars.

The landfill gas-to-energy project continues providing Fort Richardson with electricity produced by the Anchorage Regional Landfill, and the always popular “free landfill days” saved Anchorage residents over $75,000 in disposal fees, while disposing of 2,710,090 lbs. of garbage.

Solid Waste Services continues striving to make the utility customer friendly. In 2016 SWS will begin accepting credit cards payments. Customers will no longer be required to pay with cash to dispose of waste at the Central Transfer Station, or the Anchorage Regional Landfill.

SWS currently handles roughly 450 payments on a daily basis. Accepting credit cards will expedite the payment process for customers, as well as SWS employees.

“Customer service is one of our top priorities,” said Paul Alcantar, Director of Anchorage Solid Waste Services. “Accepting credit cards at our facilities will help streamline the payment process for Anchorage residents.”
