The Municipality of Anchorage Department of Health and Human Services has received its first shipment of 1,820 doses the H1N1 vaccine in the form of a nasal spray. The State of Alaska has recommended that these doses be used to vaccinate children ages 2-4 years due to their high rate of hospitalization from severe flu illness.

“The City plans to eventually have enough H1N1 vaccine to treat all Anchorage residents who would like to be immunized” said Diane Ingle, Director of the Health and Human Services Department. “Due to the limited amount of vaccine in this first shipment, we are focusing on reaching young children who have shown a higher rate of hospitalization than other age groups.”

The Municipality is working with local pediatric physicians to distribute this initial round of vaccine. Vaccine will continue to arrive in Alaska over the next several weeks, with the next shipment arriving as early as next week. Residents will be able to access vaccine through free public clinics, and school aged children will have access via clinics through the Anchorage School District. These clinics are slated to occur starting in early November, 2009. The vaccine will also be available through private healthcare providers in Anchorage. The Municipality will publicize information about public clinics and how residents can access H1N1 vaccine as it becomes available.

For more information on the H1N1 virus and up-to-date information on where vaccine is available, visit or call the Health and Human Services Department at 343-6718.
