ANCHORAGE – Mayor Ethan Berkowitz announced today Anchorage will receive two Small Business Administration (SBA) grants to help budding entrepreneurs start small businesses.  The Municipality of Anchorage will receive $50,000, as a winner of the Startup in a Day Competition and Launch: Alaska will receive $50,000, as a winner of the Economic Impact Accelerator Competition.

“Entrepreneurship and innovation must thrive in Anchorage.  Our growing small business community represents all of us in Anchorage and adds prosperity and stability to our economy,” stated Mayor Berkowitz.

Startup in a Day is an initiative designed to help cities and Native American communities streamline licensing and permitting, with the goal that an entrepreneur can apply for everything necessary to begin a business within one business day.

The Economic Impact Accelerator Competition seeks to draw attention and funding to parts of the country where gaps exist in the entrepreneurial ecosystem.  Launch: Alaska is a grassroots initiative to create new, high-growth companies in Alaska through “experience-based” education and capital investment.

“Risk-takers built this city, and entrepreneurship and innovation will help us continue to prosper.  The growing number of small businesses from all across Anchorage keep our economy healthy and vibrant,” said Mayor Berkowitz.
