ANCHORAGE –Chief of Police Mark Mew and Mayor Dan Sullivan announced today that the city’s preliminary 2010 Uniform Crime Report (UCR) shows an overall reduction in reported UCR Part 1 crime compared with 2009.

While the aggravated assault and larceny crime categories increased, the remaining five categories measured by the UCRs show decreases from 2009 to 2010: murder, forcible rape, robbery, burglary, and motor vehicle theft were all down. (See chart on page 2)

“This is good news for our community and validates our decision to focus more on drug and gang activity and street-level crime,” said Mayor Dan Sullivan. “Citizens can be proud of the men and women who work to make Anchorage a safe place to live; APD is doing a great job.”

Chief Mark Mew attributes the reduction to a focused, well-trained police department.“We hit street-level activity hard this year, and it shows. These statistics tell us that we are paying attention to the right issues, though we continue to look for ways to improve.”

The FBI receives data from more than 17,000 law enforcement agencies across the United States and the UCR reporting system ensures that data categories and information are consistent; yearly comparisons are not skewed by population swings; and city by city comparisons are accurate. The FBI only collects data on Part One Crimes and city by city crime rate comparisons are based on this data. More information on UCR can be found at http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/ucr.htm.

Mayor Sullivan added that citizens can aid police in reducing crime in the community. “I encourage citizens to educate themselves in crime prevention and awareness by partnering with the APD through programs such as Neighborhood Crime Watch and the Citizens Police Academy. When the community works together, criminals are less effective.”
