Mayor Sullivan announces recommendations for Community Development Block Grant and HOME Program recipients

Posted: 10/6/11

Recently, I announced my recommendations for this year’s Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and HOME Program (see chart).

My recommendations focus heavily on services for homeless citizens, particularly $750,000 in funding for Catholic Social Service’s Clare House, a shelter for homeless women and their children, as well as funding for Covenant House and the Brother Francis Shelter.

CDBG are federal funds designed to assist programs and organizations that serve low- and moderate-income households.  These funds can also assist neighborhood revitalization programs, economic development, junk car removal, demolition of blighted buildings, capital projects, and public services for vulnerable populations. The city's administration plays a key role in applying these monies to high priorities, such as homelessness, seniors and persons with disabilities.

Federal HOME monies will also be used for RurAL CAP to assist chronic homeless public inebriates through a housing project that offers partnerships with private and public housing agencies.

These grant recommendations continue our focus on helping our homeless citizens, especially vulnerable populations such as women and children, seniors and persons with disabilities, and youth in crisis. The amount of funding available to Clare House will allow them to purchase and renovate the old Eagle’s Nest Hotel; they can then nearly triple the number of available beds. Of course, many other important services will also receive funding, and we’re optimistic the Assembly will approve our recommendations. Public hearing and Assembly action is expected at the Oct. 11, 2011 Assembly meeting.
