On Thursday, September 19, 2013 at approximately 1:20pm the Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) Dispatch received numerous 9-1-1 calls reporting a structure fire at 221 Meyer Street.  Callers described this as a multi unit apartment complex.  Twelve units were initially dispatched to the fire.

While crews were enroute they were able to see the smoke, upon arrival they advised of heavy fire and smoke coming from the center of the building.  A second alarm response was requested which consisted of an additional four units.  First arriving crews had to assist several residents in safely exiting their apartment. 

This is a multi unit apartment building with 38 apartments and was not equipped with a sprinkler system.  All of the apartments are uninhabitable.  The American Red Cross did respond to assist those that needed help with lodging and other essential needs.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation.  Damage estimate is unknown and there were no injuries as a result of the fire.
