Fire Department

Over the last three weeks The Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) has responded to twenty-one structure fires.  Of these twenty-one fires, thirteen of those fires resulted in serious damage with combined property loss exceeding 1.5 million dollars.

We have seen a growing trend where investigations have revealed that the cause of some fires are originating from un-extinguished smoking materials on wooden decks, in window planters or carelessly discarded in other means.  The proper disposal for smoking materials is either in a metal can or in water.  Any other discarded methods pose a threat of starting a fire.

AFD would like to remind the public to make sure that you have a working smoke alarm with fresh batteries, prepare an escape plan and practice it often. Make sure everyone in your family knows at least two escape routes from their bedrooms and lastly have a fire extinguisher in your home, especially in the kitchen.
