Anchorage Fire Department (AFD) officials are prohibiting all open fires beginning at 6:00 PM Alaska Daylight Savings Time today until further notice. This notice prohibits all fires, except barbecue grills. The National Weather Service forecasters are predicting very low humidities and gusty winds over much of south-central Alaska, including the Anchorage Hillside, by late this evening, continuing into Wednesday evening. “This is a very broad area of Red Flag warning conditions that could cause an initiating wildfire to quickly drain firefighting resources”, said Anchorage Fire Chief John Fullenwider.
“Due to the lack of precipitation this spring and early snow melting, these forecasted conditions will continue to hamper green-up and further contribute to the area’s already challenging firefighting conditions”, said AFD Forester, John See. Fire officials are requesting that the public postpone any outdoor fires until conditions moderate. Please contact AFD forester, John See, at 267-4902 if you have any questions about the burning restrictions that have been implemented for the area.
Fines of $75 and/or other penalties may be assessed for non-compliance.
