Public Notice of Proposed Long-Term Lease of Municipal Park Land

The Municipality of Anchorage proposes to lease Ure Park, dedicated park land, to the Spenard Lions Club for the construction and maintenance of a clubhouse and community center within the park.  For the past 30 years, the Spenard Lions Club has utilized the original dwelling as a clubhouse on the property and maintained the surrounding Ure Park area.  As the building has aged and become outdated, the Lions Club would like to replace it with a newer, more user-friendly facility.  A new facility will allow the Lions Club to continue using and maintaining the Ure Park area, as well as allow for use by the public.  The land to be leased consists of Lots 5, 6 and 7, Block 14, Roosevelt Park Addition, according to Plat No. P-57A, Anchorage Recording District, Third Judicial District, State of Alaska, also known as Ure Park (2108 Roosevelt Dr.).

Anchorage Municipal Charter and Municipal Code require disposal, including long-term lease, of land dedicated as public park to be approved by a majority of voters at a municipal election.

The Assembly of the Municipality of Anchorage will hold a public hearing on the proposal at its regular meeting of January 28, 2014.  The public hearing portion of the meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. and is held in the Assembly Chambers, Z. J. Loussac Library, 3600 Denali Street.  The Assembly will consider placing the proposal on the election ballot scheduled for Tuesday April 1, 2014.

The proposal will also come before the Anchorage Parks and Recreation Commission at a special meeting January 23, 2014, at the Spenard Recreation Center, 2020 West 48th Ave., beginning at 5:00 p.m.

For more information about this proposal or the upcoming public hearings, please contact the Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department at 343-4355.
